Abridged History:

Vali is the king of the Vanaras, a race of human monkeys. He is a capable warrior et fought the king Ravana several times. Once, he bring his young brother, Sugriva, with him in a battle against the Rakshasas. The battle was lost, and only remains Vali and Sugriva surrounded by the ennemies. Sugriva managed to escape. Back in Dandaka Forest, he claimed that his brother was dead and was named the new king. He took Tara, his brother's widow as wife. Back from the front, Vali is not pleased by the usurpation, reclaim his place and banish his brother. Forteen years later, Sugriva came back, with his new wife and his friend Sun Wukong. He challenge his brother for the humiliation. Badly injured, the king Vali died in his wife's arms. His last word was to Sun Wukong : "He make my wife a widow and stole my kingdom. What was my crime?" to what Sun Wukong answer : "The younger brother should be trated like a son. Even if he made mistake you should forgive him". In current day, Jara, a member of the 108 Su Xing (and a human), strangly reminds Sun Wukong the vanaras' king.
